A dedicated program to increase access to sexual and reproductive health education
With the slogan “Live Your Life, Fulfill Your Goals” and via joint efforts, the three-year educational program “Family Planning Education” aims to give Vietnamese women better access to contraceptive knowledge, empowering them to plan their lives, families and careers.. To be rolled out between 2018 and 2020, this public health education program is dedicated to Vietnam WU’s officers, its members as well as women nationwide.
The public educational program on reproductive health and family planning offer reliable and scientific information via various interactive channels
In the three-year execution plan, the program includes some major activities such as advanced trainings on contraceptive methods and services for WU officers, developing digital applications serving as a platform to connect WU officers and women, and standardizing communication materials (leaflets, brochures, and other visual materials, etc.) with latest information for WU officers and organizing women health festivals and health checks, etc.
Under the program “Live Your Life, Fulfill Your Goals”, GOPFP in collaboration with the Women's Union, supported by Bayer Vietam has continuously held 15 seminars, with the aim to update knowledge of contraceptives for more than 1.200 WU officers together with 17 seminars at uiniversities attracting the participation of 5,100 students. The digital applications and online contests "Understanding of Contraception" help women test their knowledge of contraception with official sources. As a result of these exciting and effective activities, at the end of 2018, more than 15 million people are aware of the program.
It is expected that in 2019 WU will organize 18 seminars nationwide and there will be1.800 WU staffs participating in the program. At the same time, the program is also expanding its coverage to students across the country, with more than 17 universities participating in seminars on safe contraception methods, gender education with the content developed by GOPFP.As a result, the program will reach more than 25 million women across the country.
A strong commitment to support educational programs on reproductive health for Vietnamese women
“In the future, the implementation of the family planning objectives will continue to be an important component of the population program, especially the improvement of the quality of family planning services. We need to ensure access to adequate and a wide range of contraceptive options for all population groups at affordable prices, gradually eliminating disparities in access to family planning services between different geographical areas, especially for ethnic minorities and people living in remote areas”, shared Mr. Nguyen Doan Tu, Director of GOPFP, Ministry of Health.
“We are calling for all active participation of ministries, committees, organizations as well as the contribution of domestic and foreign stakeholders to the national program on population, family planning and family development”, Mr. Nguyen Doan Tu added.
Contraception as an essential part of empowering our young people
The WHO states that estimated 33 million unintended pregnancies occur each year, many may be due to contraceptive method failure or ineffective use. In Vietnam, there are currently 24.7 million women at reproductive age which is a high number. This number will continue to increase and reach its peak in 2027-2028, leading to great challenges in enhancing awareness and knowledge about contraception among the population.
The above statistics again emphasizes the importance that everyone, specifically young people, should be well informed about the different methods of contraception. By providing youths with access to scientifically accurate informationabout contraception methods, we offer them the power to make conscious decisions in planning for their future.
“Bayer has a rich history and strong commitment in women's health. We are dedicated to enhancing women’s access to contractive options that meet their individual needs. As a leading provider of oral contraceptives, we fully support national initiatives like the “Live Your Life, Fulfill Your Goals” program and share common efforts and actions to enhance awareness and broaden women’s knowledge about their reproductive health. In Vietnam, it is an honor for Bayer to be a long term partner of GOPFP for the Family Planning Program to educate the public so as to empower them to make informed decisions in using contraception for family planning and improving their quality of life,” said Dr. Lynette Moey, Managing Director of Bayer Vietnam.
Very often, young women are afraid of social stigma concerning their sexual independence and contraceptive choices. This is one of the factors to the high rates of unintended pregnancies and abortions among Vietnamese youths.
“It is our long-term commitment to contribute to better health care for Vietnamese people. We will continue our efforts to advance women’s health andfamily planning in Vietnam, building on our 25 years of engagement with the local communities,” said Dr. Lynette Moey.
